Needs, obstacles, and action plan to meet the needs of the transgender community in Puerto Rico

 

In April of 2015, Dr. Avilés directed a research project in Puerto Rico with the purpose of assessing the needs (For example, psychological, medical, social, and legal, etc.) of transgender and gender variant individuals.

 

As part of this research, Dr. Avilés recruited individuals from different professional fields, who work or have worked with the transgender community in Puerto Rico, and explored their perspectives on the needs of this community.  In addition, she recruited transgender individuals, 18 years of age and older, to explore their perspectives about their particular needs.

 

The results of this research project were presented, with the support of Amnesty International Puerto Rico, at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan.  In addition, at the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the 7th Intercontinental Convention on Psychology in Havana, Cuba.
